[D]N IOHANN-ES PF AVG, diademed and draped bust right / SALVS R[EIPVBLICAE], Victory advancing left, holding trophy over shoulder and dragging captive, Chi-Rho in the left field, RM in exergue. 11.5mm, 1.26 grams. Rome mint, RIC 1913.
Very nice piece struck on a large flan, not completely cleaned. Unlike most coins of Johannes, this piece shows his complete name. The coin is MUCH better than the scan - it is covered in sandy brown patina which is very difficult to scan.
Emperor Johannes (also spelled Joannes) was a Western Roman Emperor who ruled briefly from 423 to 425 CE during a time of political instability and imperial decline. After the death of Emperor Honorius, Joannes—a senior civil servant and primicerius notariorum (chief notary)—was proclaimed emperor by the Western court officials without approval from the Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius II. Though reportedly a moderate and capable administrator, Joannes lacked strong military support and struggled to gain legitimacy. In 425 CE, Theodosius II sent an army under Ardaburius and his son Flavius Aetius, which eventually captured Joannes. He was publicly humiliated and executed, and the child Valentinian III, backed by the Eastern court, was installed as emperor, restoring dynastic continuity.
