The rebel Wu Sangui controlled much of the southern and western China by 1674 and offered a real threat to the dominance of the newly established Qing. Wu Sangui accepted the Imperial title Zhou Wu in March 1678 and declared the foundation of a new Zhou dynasty, but died of dysentery in October 1678.
