Admiral Miklós Horthy (1868–1957) was a Hungarian naval officer and statesman who served as Regent of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1920 to 1944. Originally a prominent admiral in the Austro-Hungarian Navy during World War I, Horthy rose to political power after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the chaotic period that followed. As regent, he ruled Hungary as a conservative, nationalist figurehead under a nominal monarchy without a king. Horthy initially sought to revise the post-World War I territorial losses imposed by the Treaty of Trianon and later aligned Hungary with Nazi Germany during World War II. However, he attempted to negotiate a separate peace with the Allies as the war turned against Germany, leading to his removal from power by German forces in 1944. After the war, Horthy lived in exile in Portugal until his death.
