Constantine II (c. 316–340 CE) was the eldest son of Constantine the Great and served as a Roman emperor from 337 to 340 CE. After his father's death, the empire was divided among Constantine II and his two brothers, Constantius II and Constans. Constantine II received control of Britain, Gaul, and Spain, but tensions quickly arose between the brothers over the division of power. In 340 CE, Constantine II launched a military campaign against his younger brother Constans, hoping to expand his territory. However, during the invasion of Italy, Constantine II was ambushed and killed near Aquileia. His death left Constans in control of the western provinces, briefly consolidating more of the empire under fewer rulers.
