Azes I was an Indo-Scythian king who ruled in the late 1st century BCE, around 58–12 BCE, and is credited with consolidating Indo-Scythian power in northwestern India. He succeeded in unifying various territories previously controlled by Indo-Greek rulers, extending influence over regions like Gandhara and the Punjab. Azes I is also associated with the introduction of the Azes Era, a dating system used in ancient inscriptions and coins. His coinage, featuring Greek and Kharosthi inscriptions, reflects the cultural blending of Greek, Indian, and Central Asian traditions. His reign marked a period of stability and transition that paved the way for further Indo-Scythian rule in the region.
