Julia Domna (c. 160–217 AD) was a powerful and influential Roman empress, wife of Emperor Septimius Severus and mother to emperors Caracalla and Geta. Born in Emesa (modern-day Homs, Syria) into a prominent family of hereditary priests of the sun god Elagabal, she brought both intellect and political acumen to the imperial court. Known for her patronage of philosophers, writers, and artists, Julia Domna played a central role in the cultural and intellectual life of the empire. Following the death of her husband, she continued to wield considerable influence during the reign of her son Caracalla, accompanying him on military campaigns and acting as a political advisor. After Caracalla’s assassination and the subsequent fall of the Severan dynasty’s stability, Julia Domna took her own life in 217 AD, ending a remarkable life at the heart of Roman power.
