The Batavian Republic was a revolutionary state established in the Netherlands between 1795 and 1806, created with the support of French revolutionary forces after they invaded and overthrew the Dutch Republic. Inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution, the Batavian Republic replaced the old oligarchic regime with a more democratic, centralized government, though it remained heavily influenced and controlled by France. It introduced various reforms, including a new constitution, modernized administration, and changes to the legal and tax systems. However, political instability and French dominance limited its independence. In 1806, the Batavian Republic was dissolved and replaced by the Kingdom of Holland, a client state ruled by Napoleon’s brother, Louis Bonaparte.
