Philip V of Macedon ruled from 221 to 179 BCE and was the last significant king of the Antigonid dynasty before the Roman conquest of Greece. Ascending the throne as a teenager, he was initially celebrated for his charisma and military skill, seeking to restore Macedonian dominance in the Hellenistic world. He engaged in several conflicts, including the Social War and two Macedonian Wars against Rome. Though he expanded Macedonian influence early in his reign, his ambitions ultimately brought him into conflict with the growing power of Rome. After his defeat in the Second Macedonian War (200–197 BCE), Philip was forced to limit his power and became a Roman ally. He spent his later years reforming Macedonia and securing succession for his son Perseus, but his legacy remained overshadowed by the decline of Macedonian independence.
