The British occupation of Java took place from 1811 to 1816, during the Napoleonic Wars, when the Netherlands had fallen under French control. Concerned about French influence in the Dutch East Indies, the British launched a successful military expedition led by Sir Stamford Raffles, capturing Batavia (now Jakarta) and the island after a brief campaign. Raffles served as Lieutenant-Governor and introduced significant administrative and economic reforms, including the land-tax system and efforts to modernize governance. He also encouraged the study of Javanese culture and history, commissioning archaeological research on Borobudur. The occupation ended with the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814, and in 1816, Java was returned to Dutch control, but the period left a lasting influence on colonial administration and scholarship in the region.
