AE fals, al-Ma'mun (813-833) w/Ghassan and Layth, Nawikath Zakariya, Abbasid Caliphate
Arabic inscriptions spread on both sides: Kalima, date and mint around. Dated to 205 AH = 820 AD, mint of Nawikath Zakariyya. 22mm, 2.39 grams. Zeno 55618.
Very rare issue from the obscure mint of Nawikath / Navekat/ Nawikath Zakariyya (formerly read as Tunket or Tunkath), located somewhere in Transoxiana. Nice patina and condition, not completely cleaned. Ghassaan bin `Abbad was the governor of Khurasan in 818-820, Layth is unidentified but he might be Layth b. Sa`d who was removed as governor of Samarqand in 820 CE.
Rare Central Asian Abbasid issue, struck at the fringes of the Abbasid Empire.
