Archaic Chinese character “wang” (“King“)). 143mm, 7.56 grams. Hartill knife type 2 (cf.4.8-4.12, not listed with this character).

These are poorly understood early knives – it’s been suggested these were cast for trade with Xiongnu, since they are found in the border regions between China and the ancient Xiongnu barbarians. Some 50 types are known – the most common types are illustrated in Hartill (who copied the images from Zhongguo Gu Qian Daji). This type, with “Wang”, is not illustrated. Crudely cast (as these always are), no repairs. Very rare, especially with this character.

From an old US collection (Norman Frank Collection); Ex-CNG.
